St. Andrews Presbyterian College Earns Top Seed

ROCK HILL An unprecedented five teams Limestone, Mars Hill, Queens, St. Andrews and Wingate - finished tied for first place in the Deep South Conference following completion of the regular season with 7-2 conference records. Normal tiebreaker procedures could not break the logjam, and a blind draw was held Saturday for the top seed in next weeks Deep South Conference Tournament, with St. Andrews Presbyterian College (7-6 overall) earning the top seed. The four remaining teams were then seeded using the conferences tiebreaking procedures. Wingate University (9-4 overall) and Queens University of Charlotte (7-4) had identical 2-1 records against the remaining four tied teams, while Mars Hill (10-4) and Limestone (8-5) had 1-2 records. Wingate earned the second seed by virtue of its 12-11 double-overtime regular-season victory over Queens. The Royals are the third seed. Limestone earned the fourth seed by virtue of its 10-6 win over Mars Hill. Mars Hill is the fifth seed. St. Andrews will host eighth seed Pfeiffer (2-7 DSC, 3-10 overall) in quarterfinal action on Tuesday. Other quarterfinal games will have Wingate hosting seventh seed Catawba (3-6, 3-9); Belmont Abbey (4-5, 6-6), the sixth seed, will travel to face Queens; while fifth seed Mars Hill travels to face fourth seed Limestone. Tuesdays winners advance to the semifinals on Friday at Memorial Stadium in Charlotte, N.C. Game times Friday are 5 p.m. and 8 p.m. The championship game is set for 2 p.m. on Sunday.
