Catawba, Mars Hill Get DSC Wins; Limestone Goes Outside to Post Victory

CLINTON, S.C. – The Catawba College men’s lacrosse team used dominating second and fourth quarters to post a 22-11 victory over Presbyterian College in Deep South Conference action on Saturday afternoon in Old Bailey Stadium. Today’s game marks the final home and regular-season game of the Blue Hose’s inaugural varsity season. The Indians improve to 3-8 overall (3-5 DSC), while the loss ends PC’s 2006 campaign at 2-9 (1-8 DSC).

It was a tight first quarter as Catawba held a marginal 5-4 with sophomore midfielder Ryan Greaves (Owings, Md.) giving the Indians the go-ahead goal off an assist from freshman attacker Mark Van Hoever (Pleasant Gardner, N.C.) at 1:14. With 8:04 remaining in the first, the Blue Hose led 3-1 behind back-to-back goals from freshman attacker Tyler Dunn (Casheirs, N.C.) that were both assisted by sophomore midfielder Tim Cassios (St. Albert, Alberta).

The Indians exploded in the second period, outscoring PC, 6-1, for an 11-5 advantage at halftime. Catawba’s senior attacker Matt Riley (Baltimore, Md.) had a pair of goals in the run.

In the third quarter, the Blue Hose were only able to get within five (13-8) despite receiving two goals each from Cassios and sophomore attacker Jared Domino (St. Albert, Alberta). Senior attacker Randall Worthington (Churchville, Md.) had two of the Indians’ five goals.

It was all Catawba in the fourth period as six different players scored for the Indians. Catawba out shot PC, 54-30, hustled to 72 ground balls, and was 29-of-37 face-offs. Midfielders Sean Sullivan (Rockville, Md.) and Eric Finland (McLean, Va.) each won 13 face-offs and scooped up nine ground balls apiece.

Cassios finished the game with nine points to match the game-high on six goals and three assists, while Domino added a pair of goals and two assists and Dunn chipped in two and an assist. Freshman defender Drew Tobias (Whitsett, N.C.) picked up seven loose balls, while sophomore midfielder Walton Crosby (Jacksonville, Fla.) and freshman defender Matt Roach (Greensboro, N.C.) each had two caused turnovers. Freshman goalie David Hetu (Apex, N.C.) played all 60 minutes, making 16 saves and having six ground balls.

Van Hoever also had a game-high nine points on four goals and five assists for the Indians, while Riley contributed four goals and three assists plus nine ground balls. Worthington added six points on five goals and an assist and senior midfielder Brent Smith (Ellicott City, Md.) chipped in a hat trick and two assists, while Sullivan had three caused turnovers. Sophomores Ben Huber (Westminster, Md.) and Tres Pethel (Mooresville, N.C.) split equal time in the net, combining for eight saves.

Catawba will wrap up the regular-season on April 14 when the Indians travel to Wingate, N.C., to face DSC foe, Wingate University, at 2:00.

Limestone 13, Wheeling Jesuit 5
GAFFNEY, S.C. – The Limestone College men’s lacrosse team upset No. 10 Wheeling Jesuit, 13-5, on Saturday afternoon. The win marks the first victory over a ranked opponent for the Saints this season while ending the Cardinals’ six-game win streak.

Limestone jumped out to an early 5-1 lead in the first quarter, allowing only one Cardinal goal and ended the quarter with a 6-1 advantage. The Saints outscored the visitors, 5-1, in the second quarter to enter the second half up 11-2.

Wheeling Jesuit’s defense held the Saints’ attack to only two goals in the second half, as the Cardinals rallied to score three more goals in the final quarter. The Saints had 37 shots compared to the visitors’ 30 for the match.

Drew Comeau (Red Deer, Alberta, Canada) led Limestone with six goals. Mike MacLeod (Owen Sound, Ontario, Canada) and Brock Spilker (Pasadena, Md.) each scored twice, while Pat Beall (Mt. Airy, Md.), Ryan Verrilli (Manassas, Va.), and Alex Callihan (Centreville, Va.) had a goal a piece. Goalkeeper Marty Ward (Syracuse, N.Y.) had a solid performance with nine saves for the game. Verrilli, Brad Patridge (Dublin, Ohio), and Spilker recorded an assists, while Harley Beekman (Amsterdam, N.Y.) had two.

Limestone hosts Pfeiffer on April 15 at 2:30 p.m. in Gaffney, S.C.


Mars Hill 17, Wingate 12
MARS HILL, NC - The Lions' lacrosse team defeated Wingate University 17-12 Saturday night in Meares Stadium to clinch at least a share of the Deep South Conference regular season championship. MHC improved to 10-3 overall and 7-1 in the DSC. Wingate fell to 8-4 on the season and 6-2 in the league.

The Lions recognized their senior members of the squad before the game. Matt Holthaus (Churchville, MD), James Phelan (Farmingdale, NY) and Dusty Poore (Westminster, MD) are the Lions' senior players.

Wingate started the game with four unanswered goals. It appeared that it was going to be a long night for the Lions. MHC was able to score a couple of goals before the first frame ended but Wingate won the first quarter, 5-2. MHC rebounded in quarter number two out scoring the Bulldogs 7-4 to send the teams into the locker room at halftime with the score knotted at 9-all.

MHC took a 15-11 advantage into the final stanza after they out scored Wingate 6-2 in the third quarter. David Kemp (Webster, NY) scored two goals and assisted on two additional scores in the third period. Andrew Chapman (Toronto, Ontario) scored the go-ahead goal with 8:33 left in the third set. The fourth quarter was a defensive battle as MHC edged Wingate 2-1 to make the final tally, 17-12.

Wingate out shot the Lions 44-to-40 but shots on goal were much closer with Wingate firing only one more (32-31) than MHC. The Lions won the ground ball battle, 75-57 while the Bulldogs won 19-of-31 face-offs. Wingate was 0-for-5 in extra man opportunities, MHC was 1-for-3.

Chapman led all scorers with five goals followed by David Hodgins (Windsor, Ontario) with four goals. Brad Campbell (Middleton, WI) added three goals while Kemp scored twice and assisted on five goals. Holthaus played all 60 minutes in goal for MHC and made 20 saves.

Chris Manwaring (Vancouver, B.C.) led Wingate with three goals followed by Kyle Costello (Wilmington, NC) who scored a couple of goals and recorded three assists. Dan Leber (Orlando, FL) added two goals and one assist in the contest. Evan Watts (Winston-Salem, NC) and David Suthers (Manassas, VA) split time in goal for Wingate. Watts played the first half and made six saves facing 19 shots. Suthers played the second half and made eight saves facing 21 shots.

MHC will end DSC regular season play next Saturday when they play at Queens University in Charlotte, NC. Game time is set for 4 p.m. Wingate will host Catawba College on April 4, at 2 p.m.
