Limestone 9, St. Andrews Presbyterian 8
LAURINBURG, NC—Sophomore Brock Spilker (Pasadena, MD) scored the game-winning goal with 55 seconds left in regulation to lift visiting Limestone College to a 9-8 Deep South Conference men’s lacrosse victory over St. Andrews Presbyterian College on Wednesday at Scotland High School’s Pate Stadium.

The Saints improved to 6-5 overall and 6-2 in the DSC, while the Knights hold a 6-6 and 6-2 ledger.

After the two teams swapped the first two goals, Limestone tallied the final two goals of the first quarter to take a 3-1 lead. Senior Harley Beekman (Amsterdam, NY) started the scoring for Saints while freshmen Drew Comeau (Red Deer, Alberta, Canada) and Mike MacLeod (Owen Sound, Ontario, Canada) followed.

With the Knights defense holding Limestone scoreless for over 15 minutes, junior Dalen Crouse (St. Albert, Alberta, Canada) and junior Tony Ferreira (Youngsville, NC) scored for St. Andrews and tied the game at 3-3. However, senior Brad Patridge (Powell, OH) scored on a extra-man opportunity in the final minute of the second to give the Saints a slim 4-3 advantage into the intermission.

Junior Drew Howell (St. Albert, Alberta, Canada) ripped a goal 30 seconds into the third quarter for the Knights to tie everything at four apiece. Limestone answered with the next three goals to build a 7-4 lead on scores by Patridge, Comeau, and sophomore Neil Harris (Pasadena, MD). Howell stopped the bleeding with a EMO goal at 5:09 in the third but Spilker’s first goal regained the Saints largest lead of three. Crouse took advantage of last chance surge by the Knights with his second goal of the game with eight second left in the third to cut the margin to 8-6 heading into the final frame.

Once again, the St. Andrews defense stepped up holding Limestone scoreless for another 15 minute stretch. During that span, goals by juniors Dan Hartzell (Lacombe, Alberta, Canada) and Zach Mryncza (Baltimore, MD) tied the contest for the third time.

The game remained tied until the last minute, when Spilker came from behind the Knights goal and slipped the game-winner into the back of the net with 55 ticks left. A SAPC penalty off the ensuing face off virtually sealed the one-goal victory for Limestone.

Junior goalkeeper Marty Ward (Syracuse, NY) made a game-high 14 saves to garner the victory in net while Knights freshman netminder Nate Hull (Millersville, MD) stopped 12 shots.

St. Andrews will host DSC rival Pfeiffer University on Tuesday at 3:30 p.m. while Limestone entertains non-conference Wheeling Jesuit on Saturday at 2:00 p.m.
