MARS HILL, NC - The Lions' lacrosse team defeated Deep South Conference rival St. Andrews College Saturday afternoon in Meares Stadium by a score of 13-9. MHC improved to 9-3 overall and 6-1 in the league while the Knights fell to 6-5 overall and 6-1 in the DSC. The win puts MHC in a tie for first place in the Deep South Conference.

Andrew Chapman (Toronto, Ontario) led the Lions to the win scoring seven of the squad's goals in the game. He added an assist to total eight points in the win.

Chapman scored his third consecutive goal of the game with 8:15 left in the first quarter to give MHC a 3-2 advantage they would not relinquish the remainder of the contest. The Lions led 5-2 after the first quarter of play but St. Andrews out scored MHC 4-3 in the second frame to send the teams into the locker room at halftime with Mars Hill enjoying an 8-6 lead.

The second half was closely played with MHC only out scoring St. Andrews by a single goal in both the third and fourth quarters. MHC won the third frame 2-1 and then won the last quarter, 3-2 to make the final tally, 13-9.

MHC out shot St. Andrews 42-to-33 and won the ground ball battle 51-to-44. MHC also won 15-of-25 face-offs. Neither team was able to capitalize on extra man opportunities as they teams combined to miss out on nine man-up chances.

Following Chapman's stellar performance was David Kemp (Webster, NY) with three goals and Brad Campbell (Middleton, WI) with two goals and an assist. Matt Holthaus (Churchville, MD) played all 60 minutes in goal for MHC and made 19 saves in the victory.

Drew Howell (Alberta, Canada) led St. Andrews with three goals followed by Zach Mryncza (Baltimore, MD) and Dan Hartzell (Alberta, Canada) who recorded two goals apiece. Nate Hull (Millersville, MD) also played the entire game in the net for St. Andrews and made 13 saves.

MHC will host Wingate University in another DSC contest next Saturday night. Game time is slated for a 6 p.m. start.

Queens 14, Catawba 11
SALISBURY, NC -- Queens University of Charlotte overcame a 10-5 halftime deficit and defeated host Catawba 14-11 in Deep South Conference men’s lacrosse action on Saturday afternoon at Shuford Stadium and Kirkland Field. Queens improves to 4-4 overall and 4-2 in the DSC, while the Indians fall to 2-7 and 2-4.

Catawba jumped out to a 6-1 lead after the opening quarter. Matt Riley (Baltimore, MD) scored the opening two goals for the Tribe. Mark Van Hoever (Pleasant Garden, NC) tallied the final goal of the first quarter and had the opening tally of the second frame as Catawba jumped to an 8-1 edge. Queens rallied to cut the margin to 10-5 by the half, getting two goals from Andy Cappello (Bel Air, MD).

After the half, the Royals took control. Queens out-scored Catawba 6-0 in the third quarter to grab an 11-10 lead. Alexander Tack (Ellicott City, MD) scored four of his five goals in the third stanza for the Royals. A goal by Randall Worthington (Churchville, MD) brought Catawba within 12-11 at the 7:45 mark, but Queens struck right back on a goal from Ingram Deandre (Raleigh, NC) with 6:50 left.

Tack had five goals and an assist to pace Queens. Van Hoever had three goals and an assist for Catawba, while Worthington and Riley each had two goals. David Overberg (Cincinnati, OH), Stephen LeBlanc (Stoney Creek, Ontario, CANADA) and Cappello had two tallies for the Royals.

Wingate 16, Limestone 11
GAFFNEY, S.C. – The Saints lacrosse team lost a tough game to conference-rival Wingate University on Saturday at Saints Field, 16-11. The Bulldogs’ climb to 7-3 overall and 5-1 in Deep South Conference play, while Limestone stands at 5-5 overall (5-2 DSC).

While Limestone got off to a solid start with Harley Beekman (Amsterdam, N.Y.), scoring the game’s first goal off the opening face-off, and Ryan Verrilli (Manassas, Va.) scoring less than a minute later, the visitors answered with three back-to-back goals. Both teams ended up with three goals in the first period, but Wingate gradually pulled away in the second, outscoring Limestone, 3-2. The Bulldogs had 10 goals to Limestone’s six in the remaining two periods for the win.

For the Saints, Verrilli had three goals, as Brad Patridge (Dublin, Ohio), Mike MacLeod (Owen Sound, Ontario, Canada), and Beekman each scored two. Alex Callihan (Centreville, Va.) and Lee Park (Victoria, British Columbia) also recorded goals. Patridge dished out two assists, while Drew Comeau (Red Deer, Alberta, Canada), David Hagel (Oviedo, Fla.) and MacLeod tallied assists. Goalkeeper Marty Ward (Syracuse, N.Y.) posted seven saves.

Chris Manwaring (Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada) had a game-high five goals, while Kyle Costello (Wilmington, N.C.) and Stephen Torkington (Coronado, Calif.) scored three, Dan Leber (Orlando, Fla.) tallied three, and John Martin (Raleigh, N.C.), Bryan Safarik (Vancouver, British Columbia), and Ryan Otterblad (Dumfries, Va.) added a goal a piece. Goalkeeper Evan Watts (Winston-Salem, N.C.) recorded 16 saves for the match.

Limestone travels to Laurinburg, N.C., to play St. Andrews on April 5 at 6 p.m.
