Belmont Abbey Wins First-Ever DSC Match; St. Andrew's Presbyterian, Mars Hill Also Post League Wins

CLINTON, S.C. – The Belmont Abbey College men’s lacrosse team, a first-year program just like Presbyterian College’s program, earned their first-ever Deep South Conference (DSC) with a 19-8 victory over the host Blue Hose in Old Bailey Stadium on Saturday afternoon. The loss drops PC to 2-5 overall and 1-5 in league action, while Belmont Abbey improves to 3-4 on the year and 1-3 in the DSC.

The Crusaders gained control of the game in the first period as Belmont Abbey outscored the Blue Hose, 8-1, behind a hat trick and three assists from junior attacker Clyde Robinson (Binghamton, N.Y.). The Crusaders went on to shutout PC, 4-0, in the second frame to take a 12-1 lead at halftime. Freshman midfielder William Hackett (Nesbit, Miss.) picked up only Blue Hose score in the first half.

In the second half, Belmont Abbey and PC were dead even as both teams tallied seven goals apiece between the third and fourth periods. The scoring margin in the third quarter was 4-4, while it was 3-3 in the final stanza.

The Crusaders out shot the Blue Hose, 65-26, won 19-of-28 face-offs, and scooped up 69 ground balls to PC’s 40. Junior midfielder Mike Flanigan (Bowie, Md.) went 19-of-28 in face-offs for Belmont Abbey.

Sophomore attacker Jared Domino (St. Albert, Alberta) led PC’s offense with five goals and an assist, while Hackett finished with a pair of goals and five ground balls. Sophomore attacker Tim Cassios (St. Albert, Alberta) also had two points on a goal and an assist. Defensively, freshman defender Matt Roach (Greensboro, N.C.) picked up nine ground balls. Freshman goalie David Hetu (Apex, N.C.) played all 60 minutes in goal, making 18 saves and hustling to five loose balls.

Robinson went on to finish the game with 10 points on six goals and four assists as well as seven ground balls and three caused turnovers. Sophomore attacker Jonathan Fuggit (Crofton, Md.) also had a strong game for the Crusaders, recording five goals and a pair of assists plus six ground balls, and junior attacker Aaron Flood (Pikesville, Md.) contributed five goals and an assist. Flanigan led his team with a game-high 16 ground balls, while junior defender Shane Rye (Marietta, Pa.) caused five turnovers and had nine ground balls. Sophomore Mark Kelske (Bohemia, N.Y.) had four stops and allowed five goals in the first three periods of play, while junior Brett Berdine (Endwell, N.Y.) made three and gave up three in the fourth period.

The Blue Hose will have a week off to regroup as their next game will be on March 25 when PC travels to Misenheimer, N.C., to face conference opponent, Pfeiffer University, at 2:00. Belmont Abbey will host Limestone College on Wednesday, March 22, at 3:30.

St. Andrews 14, Presbyterian, Wingate 9
Wingate, N.C.----St. Andrews Presbyterian College junior attack men Zach Mryncza (Baltimore, Md.) and Dan Hartzell (Lacombe, Alberta, Canada) scored four goals each to lead the Knights to a 14-9 Deep South Conference men’s lacrosse victory over Wingate University Saturday afternoon at Irwin Belk Stadium and John R. Martin Field on the Wingate campus.

With the victory, St. Andrews remains undefeated in DSC play with a 4-0 league ledger. The Knights even their overall record at 4-4. Wingate falls to 4-3 overall and 2-1 in the DSC. The Bulldogs host Pfeiffer University for another DSC game Wednesday at 3:30 p.m.

The Knights snapped a 5-5 halftime tie with a five-goal third quarter. St. Andrews outscored Wingate 5-1 in the pivotal third quarter. Mryncza scored the first two goals of the second half for the visitors, giving the Knights the lead for good. Mryncza scored all four of his goals after intermission.

Hartzell led the Knights in the first half, scoring three of his four goals in the first 30 minutes. St. Andrews sprinted to a 5-1 lead early in the second quarter, thanks to Hartzell’s three goals and single scores by freshman midfield Max Kalkstein (Mystic, Conn.) and junior midfield Drew Howell (St. Albert, Alberta).

Wingate rallied to tie the score with four second quarter goals. Safarik scored three of his game-high five goals in the second quarter, including a tally with 35.5 seconds to go in the first half to make the score 5-5 at halftime.

St. Andrews outshot Wingate 22-15 in the second half, including 12-6 in the third quarter. Mryncza and Hartzell led the way with four goals each. Six other players had one goals each for the Knights.

Wingate sophomore attack Kyle Costello (Wilmington, N.C.) support Safarik’s five-goal effort with two goals and two assists. Bulldog senior midfield Chris Manwaring (Vancouver, British Columbia) and freshman midfield Ryan Otterblad (Dumfries, Va.) added single goals for the hosts.


Mars Hill 12, Catawba 5
MARS HILL, NC - The Lions' lacrosse team defeated Deep South Conference rival Catawba College Saturday night in Meares Stadium by a score of 12-5. MHC improved to 7-3 overall and 4-1 in the league while the Indians fell to 2-4 overall and 2-1 in the DSC.

After being tied at 1-1 for most of the first quarter, Andrew Chapman (Ontario, Canada) gave MHC a 2-1 lead with 4:16 left in the first stanza and the Lions never looked back. MHC scored one additional goal in the first quarter before scoring four unanswered goals in the seconds frame to take a commanding 7-1 lead into the locker room at the intermission.

MHC extended their advantage to 9-2 after the third period and then the teams battled to a 3-3 tie in the fourth quarter to make the final tally, 12-5.

The Lions out shot Catawba, 41-to-26. MHC won the ground ball battle 67-to-56 and took 15-of-21 face-off attempts. MHC capitalized on only 1-of-8 extra man opportunities.

Chapman led all scorers with four goals followed by Brad Campbell (Middleton, WI) who added three scores. Vincent Giganti (Damascus, MD) recorded a pair of goals in the win. Matt Holthaus (Churchville, MD) played all 60 minutes in goal for MHC and made 11 saves.

Mark Van Hoever (Pleasant Garden, NC) led Catawba with a goal and two assists. Ben Huber (Westminster, MD) played the entire game in the net for the Indians and made 16 saves.

MHC will play at Lees-McRae College in Banner Elk, NC on March 25. Game time is set for a 7 p.m. start. Catawba will Host St. Andrews College on March 22 at 3:30 p.m.
