Crusaders Earn First Men's Lacrosse Win in Program History; Defeat Manhattanville College, 18-2

BELMONT, NC – Belmont Abbey’s men’s lacrosse team won its first game in program history Friday afternoon. The Crusaders defeated Manhattanville College 18-2 in the home opener to even their record at 1-1 on the year. Manhattanville drops to 0-1 with the loss.

The Abbey broke out of the gates quickly, outscoring the Valiants 3-1 in the first quarter on goals from Aaron Flood, John Fuggitt, and C.J. Robinson. Belmont Abbey broke the game open in the second quarter with six goals, including three in less than a minute, to lead 9-1 at the break. Fuggitt had three goals in the quarter and Robinson added two more.

The Crusaders added three more in the third quarter while shutting out Manhattanville to lead 12-1, and then completed the scoring with a 6-1 advantage in the fourth. The Abbey out shot the Valiants 50-20, scooped up 39 ground balls to MC’s 21 and won the face-off battle 13-7.

Fuggitt led all scorers with five goals and three assists for eight points while Robinson and Flood each added four goals and two assists for six points. Matt Holzworth had two goals and two assists and Taylor Brulport scored a pair of goals with one assist. Korey Earles dished out three assists while Mike Flanigan finished with a goal and P.J. Shea added an assist. Flanigan also won eight face-offs.

The Crusaders will now prepare a visit from cross-town rival Queens University of Charlotte at 4:00 PM on Wednesday, March 1.
