Wingate Tops Lees-McRae in DSC Men's Lacrosse Action

Wingate, N.C.----Wingate University senior attackman Julio Diaz-Jane (Miami, Fla.) had three goals and two assists as each of Wingate’s three seniors netted a goal in the Bulldogs’ 18-8 Deep South Conference lacrosse win over Lees-McRae College Wednesday afternoon at Irwin Belk Stadium and John R. Martin Field on the Wingate campus.

Bulldog freshman attackman Kyle Costello (Wilmington, N.C.) had four goals and one assist for Wingate (2-8 overall, 2-4 DSC). Lees-McRae senior attackman Nik Nixon led the Bobcats (1-9 overall, 0-5 DSC) with four goals.

Diaz-Jane and his fellow seniors helped lead the Bulldogs to a season-high 18 goals in the trio’s final regular season home appearance. Both senior attackman Matt DiMartino (Bay Shore, N.Y.) and senior midfielder Travis Rimert (Berwyn, Pa.) notched one goal each for the Bulldogs Wednesday. Rimert also dished out one assist.

Lees-McRae led 3-2 after one period. Wingate answered with seven goals in the second period, taking a 9-5 lead at intermission. Kyle Costello had three of his four goals in the pivotal second period, while Diaz-Jane stepped up with one goal and two assists in the second frame. The Bobcats would get no closer the rest of the way.

Wingate outshot Lees-McRae 46-28. The Bulldogs scooped up 76 ground balls, compared to only 45 for the Bobcats. Wingate freshman goalkeeper David Suthers (Manassas, Va.) had six saves in 54-plus minutes. He gave up eight goals. Lees-McRae freshman netminder Adam Canoy went the distance. Canoy allowed 18 goals and recorded 15 saves.

The Bulldogs will return to action Saturday, April 16, visiting Catawba College for a 2 p.m. Deep South Conference game. Lees-McRae returns home this Saturday (April 9) to host Catawba in a 4 p.m. league encounter.
