Queens 12, Wingate 10 Charlotte, N.C.----The Queens University of Charlotte mens lacrosse team broke a 10-10 tie with two fourth period goals en route to a 12-10 Deep South Conference win over Wingate University Wednesday afternoon at Memorial Stadium. Queens improves to 5-4 overall and 3-1 in the DSC. Wingate is 1-7 overall and 1-3 in the DSC. The Bulldogs have made close games a habit in 2005. Six of Wingates seven games have been decided by three goals or less. Two have been decided by one goal, two more have been settled by two goals and two others have been three-goal affairs. The two teams were tied 10-10 after three periods of play. Queens freshman attack Nick Mezzanotte scored the game-winner with 12:42 to play in the fourth period. Mezzanotte led the Royals with five goals and one assist on the afternoon. Queens sophomore midfielder David Overberg added an insurance goal for the Royals with 6:40 to go in the fourth period, settling the final score. Queens outshot Wingate 37-23 on the afternoon. Wingate freshman attack Kyle Costello (Wilmington, N.C.) led the Bulldogs with four goals and three assists. Costellos 16 goals lead the Wingate scoring charts. Bulldog senior attack Matt DiMartino (Bay Shore, N.Y.) and junior midfielder Chris Manwaring (Vancouver, British Columbia) had two goals each for the visitors. The Bulldogs led 2-1 after one period and 8-5 at halftime. Wingate pushed its advantage to 10-7 in the third period before Queens made its rally. Both goalkeepers went the distance. Wingate freshman netminder David Suthers (Manassas, Va.) had 15 saves, while Queens sophomore goalkeeper Joe Heimbigner notched 10 saves. Catawba 14, St. Andrews 12 LAURINBURG, NCThe St. Andrews mens lacrosse team out scored Deep South Conference rival Catawba 6-2 in the fourth quarter but could not complete the comeback as the visiting Indians held onto a 14-12 victory on Wednesday. The Knights (3-9 overall, 3-2 DSC) took the early lead on a goal by senior Chris Stott (Manchester, England) in the second minute of the contest. Freshman Jason Collier (Franklin, MA) put Catawba on the board with 2:50 remaining in the first. The Indians (2-5, 2-2) took the lead for good midway thru the second quarter with consecutive goals by junior Jason Windett (Magnolia, DE) and senior Craig Emory (Beltsville, MD) within a 31 second window. Both teams split the remaining four goals of the half and Catawba held a 5-3 advantage during intermission. Freshman Mike Dolesh (Aquasco, MD) scored with two seconds left in the third stanza to cap a 7-2 quarter by Catawba, giving the Indians a comfortable 12-6 lead. The Knights hung in and after swapping opening goals went on a 5-0 run to pull within one goal at 13-12. Stott converted on an extra-man opportunity with 1:31 to finish the run but a last minute, transition goal by Brent Smith (Ellicott City, MD) ended SAPCs hopes of completing the comeback. Senior goalkeeper Frank Fish (Damascus, MD) improved to 2-3 after making 17 saves while senior Chris Sherman (Bel Air, MD) fell to 3-8 in net for St. Andrews. Sophomore Kurt Green (San Diego, CA) led the Indians with five goals. Windett and Dolesh followed with two tallies apiece. Windett also supplied five assists. Stott led the Knights attack with three goals and two assists. Dan Hartzell (Lacombe, Alberta, Canada), Kyle Weiher (St. Albert, Alberta, Canada) and Drew Howell (St. Albert, Alberta, Canada) all registered two goals. Pat Fitzgerald (Baltimore, MD) had a goal and two assists; Kris Hartzell (Lacombe, Alberta, Canada) scored his first goal of the season; and Cole Howell (St. Albert, Alberta, Canada) added a goal and an assist. The Knights travel to Gaffney, SC, for a DSC match-up with No. 2 nationally ranked Limestone at 2:00 p.m. Limestone 31, Lees-McRae 1 BANNER ELK, NC: The Limestone College men's lacrosse team improved to 7-0 overall and 5-0 in the Deep South Conference with a 31-1 win over Lees-McRae College (1-6) on Wednesday. Roger Vyse had a career high 9 goals as he led the Saints to the program's largest margin of victory. Limestone led 10-0 after the first quarter and 19-1 at halftime. Nik Nixon scored the Bobcats lone goal with 8:18 remaining in the second quarter. Freshman, Brad Stelter scored his first 4 career goals. Bobby Woody also found the net four times. Vyse finished with 10 points on 9 goals and an assist. Woody tallied 9 points on 4 goals and 5 assists. Limestone took 67 shots while the defense allowed just 11 for the Bobcats. Three Limestone goalkeepers combined to make 6 saves. Limestone will return to action on Saturday when they host St. Andrews Presbyterian College in a Deep South Conference contest. That game is scheduled to begin at 2:00 p.m. on Saints field. |
