Catawba Takes Win Over Pfeiffer, Mars Hill Over Lees-McRae

SALISBURY, NC -- Catawba’s Kurt Green (San Diego, CA) and Matt Riley (Baltimore, MD) each scored four goals as the host Indians defeated Pfeiffer 16-6 in Deep South Conference men’s lacrosse action on Saturday afternoon at Shuford Stadium and Kirkland Field.

Catawba improves to 1-5 overall and 1-2 in the DSC, while the Falcons fall to 3-4 and 1-3.

Green opened the scoring just 45 seconds into the game, but Pfeiffer tallied twice in the opening five minutes to hold a 2-1 edge. The Indians would take a 3-2 lead at the end of the quarter on Riley’s goal with 30 seconds left. Green scored twice early in the second quarter as Catawba went up 5-2 and closed the half with an 8-3 advantage.

Catawba would score 10 straight goals from the end of the second quarter to early in the fourth to grab a 15-3 lead. Jeremy Fenton (Odenton, MD) scored twice for Pfeiffer to end the run. Jason Windett (Magnolia, DE) had six assists for Catawba, while Trevor Krauss (Owings, MD) led Pfeiffer with three goals with Robert Bickerstaff (Maitland, FL) adding four assists.

Mars Hill, NC – The Lions' lacrosse team shutout the visiting Bobcats of Lees-McRae College tonight in Meares Stadium by a score of 9-0. MHC improved to 2-2 in the Deep South Conference and 2-8 overall. LMC fell to 0-3 in the DSC and 1-6 on the season.

MHC jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first quarter after Matthew DeCaire (Milton, Ontario) scored at the 6:47 mark, Miles Robinson (Hicksville, NY) scored at the 5:37 mark, and Jack Riggins (Charlottesville, NC) scored with 3:57 left in the first frame. All three of the goals were unassisted.

MHC added two goals in the second stanza after DeCaire scored another unassisted goal and Anthony Triolo (Hicksville, NY) scored on a pass from Michael Wigdzinski (Hicksville, NY). The Lions went into the locker room with a 5-0 advantage at intermission.

MHC scored only one goal in the third quarter. Xavier Noel sailed a shot past LMC's goalkeeper with 9:18 left in the period.

At the 13:18 mark in the final quarter Riggins made a remarkable under-handed shot after receiving a pass from Vincent Giganti (Damascus, MD). Triolo then scored his second goal in the game with 3:26 left in regulation on a pass from Robinson. Shane George (Charleston, SC) ended the scoring with 2:13 on the clock to make the final tally, 9-0.

DeCaire, Triolo and Riggins each scored a pair of goals in the victory to lead the Lions. MHC goalkeeper Matt Holthaus (Churchville, MD) made three saves in goal facing 15 shots to pick up his first shutout of the year. MHC out shot the Bobcats 35-to-15. The Lions also picked up 55 ground balls in the contest. Kyle Harter (Whitesboro, NY) played all 60 minutes in the net for LMC and made 10 saves.

MHC will play at DSC rival Wingate University on April 2. Game time is slated for a 2:00 p.m. start.
