Saint Michael's 10, Wingate 7 Wingate, N.C.----Saint Michaels (Vt.) College junior attack Brandon Kobelt tallied five goals to lead the Purple Knights to a 10-7 mens lacrosse win over Wingate University Friday afternoon at Irwin Belk Stadium and John R. Martin Field on the Wingate campus. With the win, Saint Michaels improves to 2-0 overall. Wingate falls to 1-5 overall. The Bulldogs will host NCAA Division II number two Limestone College in Deep South Conference action Thursday afternoon at 3:30 p.m. The Purple Knights visit Bentley (Mass.) College Wednesday night (7 p.m.) for a Northeast-10 Conference game. The two teams battled to a 3-3 tie after two periods. In the pivotal third period, the Purple Knights outscored the Bulldogs 4-1 to pull away. Kobelt scored three of his five goals in the crucial third frame. Kobelt gave the visitors the lead for good with the opening goal of the second half. Kobelt tallied at the 12:39 mark of the third period, scoring on an assist from freshman attack Gregory Lazarus to give the Purple Knights a 4-3 lead. Saint Michaels led 7-4 after three periods. After an unassisted goal by freshman attack Mike Boerma gave the Purple Knights an 8-4 with 12:53 to go in the fourth period, Wingate sophomore attack Bryan Safarik (Vancouver, British Columbia) scored back-to-back goals to pull the Bulldogs within two at 8-6. Safarik second goal of the half came with 7:48 remaining in the fourth period. Wingate would get no closer the rest of the way. Safarik led the Bulldogs with three goals on the afternoon. Bulldog junior midfielder Chris Manwaring (Vancouver, British Columbia) added two goals for the hosts. In addition to Kobelts five goals, Boerma added two goals and one assist for the Purple Knights. Saint Michaels freshman goalkeeper Jeff Hannon picked up the win in the nets. He tallied 22 saves. Wingate freshman netminder David Suthers (Manassas, Va.) went the distance in the goal for the Bulldogs. Suthers notched 14 saves. Offensively, Saint Michaels outshot Wingate 37-34 on the afternoon. Mars Hill 12, Catawba 10 Salisbury, NC - Mars Hill's Matthew DeCaire (Milton, Ontario, Canada) intercepted a clearing pass and scored with 56 seconds remaining to help lift the Lions over host Catawba 12-10 in Deep South Conference men's lacrosse action on Saturday afternoon at Frock Field. Mars Hill improves to 1-7 overall and 1-2 in the DSC, while the Indians fall to 0-5 and 0-2. DeCaire scored three goals to pace the Lions, including two in the opening quarter as Mars Hill jumped out to a 6-1 edge. Catawba would battle back and closed the game to 8-5 at the half. The Indians would score five straight goals to take a 10-9 lead on a tally by Joe Cristaldi (Highland, MD) with 12:42 remaining in the fourth quarter. Mars Hill would tie the score with 3:52 left on a goal by Anthony Triolo (Hicksville, NY). DeCaire gave the Lions the lead and Lance Renes (Aurora, CO) gave Mars Hill an insurance goal with 18 seconds to play. The Lions held a 41-32 edge in shots and had a 45-37 edge in ground balls.
