Deep South Lacrosse Wednesday Action Finds Wingate Winning Conference Match; Catawba, Mars Hill Drop Non-Conference Contests

SALISBURY, NC -- Saint Michael’s Mark Agostinelli (Dedham, MA) scored two goals in the final two minutes, including the game-winning goal with 6.8 seconds remaining as the Purple Knights defeated host Catawba 15-14 in men’s lacrosse action on Wednesday afternoon at Shuford Stadium and Kirkland Field. Saint Vincent wins its season opener, while the Indians fall to 0-4.

The teams battled through cold and rainy conditions with St. Michael’s scoring four of the last five goals to pull out the win. The Knights had jumped out to a 5-1 lead and held a 5-2 edge after one quarter. St. Michael’s still enjoyed a three-goal lead of 7-4 at the half. The Purple Knights grabbed a 9-4 edge at the start of the third quarter, but Catawba reeled off five straight goals to end the third quarter to tie the contest at 9-9.

Catawba took its first lead on a goal by Jason Collier (Franklin, MA) at the 9:23 mark of the fourth quarter. The Indians took a13-11 lead following a Matt Riley (Baltimore, MD) tally with 6:56 to go. St. Michael’s tied the game at the 4:19 mark on a goal by Eric Libby (Cohasset, MA). Kurt Green (San Diego, CA) gave the Tribe a 14-13 lead with 2:46 remaining, but Agostinelli evened the game at the 1:54 mark and scored the game-winner in the final seconds.

Green scored five goals to pace Catawba, while Jason Windett (Magnolia, DE) recorded a school-record seven assists. Agostinelli and Libby each had four goals for St. Michael’s, while Jeff Hannon (Wilbraham, MA) had 10 saves.

Wingate 12, Pfeiffer 10

Misenheimer, N.C.----The Wingate University lacrosse team rallied from a late 9-8 deficit to take a 12-10 Deep South Conference win over Pfeiffer University Wednesday afternoon.

The Bulldogs (1-4 overall, 1-1 DSC) scored four unanswered goals to take a 12-9 lead over the Falcons (2-3 overall, 1-2 DSC). Wingate sophomore attack Bryan Safarik scored the game-winner with 4:13 remaining in the contest to give the visitors a 10-9 advantage.

Safarik and freshman attack Kyle Costello had four goals and one assist each for the Bulldogs. Wingate freshman goalkeeper David Suthers notched 11 saves.


Molloy 12, Mars Hill 6

Stony Brook, NY – The Lions lost to Molloy College this afternoon, 12-6. The game was played on the campus of Stony Brook University.

Molloy jumped out to a 5-1 lead in the first frame and never looked back. Scoring in the second quarter was tied at 1-1 and then Molloy out scored the Lions 4-2 in the third period before each team tallied two goals apiece in the last quarter.

Kyle Worthley (Kennesaw, GA) led the Lions with two goals. Miles Robinson (Hicksville, NY), Anthony Triolo (Hicksville, NY), Vincent Giganti (Damascus, MD) and James Wallace (Hilliard, OH) each recorded single goals in the loss for MHC. Matt Holthaus (Churchville, MD) played all 60 minutes in goal for MHC making 18 saves facing 41 shots.

The Lions will meet Deep South Conference rival Catawba College on Saturday in Salisbury, NC. Game time is set for a 2:00 p.m. start.
