Saints Fall in Double Overtime to LeMoyne in
National Men's Lacrosse Final |

BALTIMORE, MD: Limestone’s fifth consecutive appearance in the NCAA Division II Men’s Lacrosse National Championship Game, featured two teams that were unbeaten in Division II competition. LeMoyne College was a perfect 15-0 while the Saints carried a record of 15-1, their only loss coming against the University of North Carolina.
From the opening face-off the game seemed destined to go down to the wire. At the end of the day, the game saw eight ties and five lead changes while neither team enjoyed a lead greater than two goals. LeMoyne won the national championship with an 11-10 victory in double overtime. Limestone’s Nolan Heavenor got the Saints on the board first at the 10:20 mark in the first quarter. LeMoyne tied the score with a Brandon Spillet (his first of seven) goal at the 5:13 mark. With less than five minutes left in the half Bobby Woody scored to bring the score to 3-3. However, with 41 seconds remaining in the half LeMoyne’s Ed Street put the Dolphins back on top at 4-3. In the third quarter David Wooster, Jason Randolph, and Roger Vyse scored four goals (Randolph finding the net twice) to tie the game at 7-7. In the fourth quarter, Patrick Cardiff put the Saints back on top (9-8) with a goal at the 9:53 mark. Spillet answered two minutes later to tie the game at 9-9. Senior Jason Randolph thought he might have put his team ahead for good when he scored with 1:11 remaining to bring the score to 11-10. However, a controversial unsportsmanlike conduct penalty was called for excessive celebration after the goal. The penalty nullified the ensuing face-off giving LeMoyne the ball with a man-up advantage. With nine seconds left LeMoyne Called a timeout. Spillet took the ball when play resumed and scored, diving in front of the net, to send the game to overtime. One overtime was not enough to finish off a great game. With 3:16 remaining in the second OT period, Spillet found the net for the seventh time (one short of a Championship Game record). Jason Randolph score three goals and assisted on one more in his final game at Limestone. Roger Vyse added three goals while David Wooster had a goal and an assist. Robert Woody, Patrick Cardiff, and Nolan Heavenor also scored for the Saints. Chris Barrett and Josh Waite had assists for Limestone. Brandon Spillets seven goals were one shy of the Championship Game record of eight. He also added an assist for the Dolphins. After the game Head Coach TW Johnson had this to say about the game. “I’d like to congratulate LeMoyne. This was probably the best lacrosse game I have ever been a part off. There were no losers on that field. Just two teams who scratched and clawed through two overtimes. I’m very proud of my guys.” Senior Jason Randolph also spoke about the game. “We fought as hard as we could, and they did the same. This was my last time, and that’s hard. This was probably the best squad I’ve played with.” Johnson also spoke about his group of seniors. “Those guys have been the corner stone of everything we’ve done. They have a tremendous record here at Limestone, and they will be deeply missed.” Limestone’s seniors have won four Deep South Conference Championships and to NCAA Division II Championships. |
