Mars Hill Falls to Wingate, 18-11

MARS HILL, NC – The Lions (0-4/1-7) lost to Deep South Conference (DSC) rival Wingate University (2-3/3-6) this afternoon in Meares Stadium, 18-11. Steve Maxwell (Media, PA) led the Bulldogs to victory recording 10 points in the win by scoring three goals and providing his teammates with seven assists in the win.

The game was close in the first half. Wingate enjoyed a 4-2 lead after the first quarter but the Lions fought back out scoring Wingate 4-3 in the second quarter to cut the Bulldogs lead to 7-6 going into the locker room at halftime.

The third quarter sealed the Lions' fate as they were outscored 8-1, a deficit that proved to be more than they could overcome. All eight of the goals were scored in succession which gave Wingate a 15-6 lead before MHC got back on the board with 21 seconds left in the third frame after Andrew Chapman (Toronto, Ontario) scored one of his game-high eight goals in the contest. MHC out scored the Bulldogs 4-3 in the final stanza but the eight unanswered goals by Wingate in the third frame was too much to overcome.

Following Maxwell for Wingate was Blake Taylor (Williamstown, AUS) with two goals and six assists. Matt DiMartino (Bay Shore, NY) posted five goals in the victory. Jonathan Cofer (Kingwood, TX) and Alex Woods (West Simsbury, CT) split time in goal for Wingate. Cofer made eight saves in the net for Wingate playing over 40 minutes while Woods made a single save in the final 20 minutes of play. The duo faced 20 shots on goal.

Following Chapman for the Lions was Sean Humphreys (Philadelphia, PA) with two goals and one assist in the game. Jack Riggins (Charlottesville, VA) added a goal and two assists in the contest. Matt Holthaus (Bel Air, MD) played all 60 minutes in goal for the Lions making six saves facing 24 shots on goal.

MHC recognized the team's four senior prior to the opening face-off. Humphreys, Conner Jardeleza (Burtonsville, MD), Dan Sandlin (Ferndale, MD) and David Woodlief (Richmond, VA) represent the Lions' senior lacrosse players on the 2004 squad.

Mars Hill will play at Queens University on April 5, at 4:00 p.m. in another DSC rivalry. Wingate will play at Lees-McRae College on April 7 at 5:00 p.m.
