Catawba Holds Off Molloy 12-8

SALISBURY, NC -- Catawba College used a run of six straight goals to break open a close match and held on to defeat visiting Molloy 12-8 in men’s lacrosse action on Friday afternoon at Shuford Stadium and Kirkland Field. Senior David Dunnuck (Greensboro, NC) led Catawba with three goals. The Indians improve to 4-3, while Molloy falls to 6-1.

The first quarter would end tied a 2-2 and the Tribe tallied the first two goals of the second quarter for a 4-2 edge. Mike Zabielski (Baldwin, NY) scored twice within a minute for the Lions to knot the game at 4-4 with 3:32 remaining before the half. Catawba would then go on its six goal run. The Indians scored twice before halftime and added four straight to start the third quarter for a 10-4 edge at the 9:22 mark.

Molloy would hold Catawba scoreless over the next 20 minutes and closed within 10-7 on a goal by Timothy Harrington (North Babylon, NY) with 13:43 remaining. That would be the final Lion tally until the final minute. The game stayed 10-7 for nearly 10 minutes before John Godfrey (Ipswich, MA) snapped the long scoring draught for Catawba with 3:7 left.

Dunnuck led Catawba with four points (three goals, one assist), while Matt Riley (Baltimore, MD), Kurt Green (San Diego, CA) and Justin Garrison (Charlotte, NC) all had three points. Green had two goals. Zabielski had four goals for Molloy, while Tim Stevens (New Hyde Park, NY) tallied twice. Stevens was 15- of-19 on face-off opportunities.
