No. 8 Mercyhurst Tops Wingate; Queens Loses to Notre Dame de Namur; Catawba Falls to Greensboro in Men's Lacrosse

Wingate, N.C.----Mercyhurst College junior attack Mike McLellan had five goals and one assist as the number eight Lakers defeated Wingate University 20-4 in men’s lacrosse action Wednesday afternoon at Irwin Belk Stadium and John R. Martin Field on the Wingate campus.

The contest was the season-opening game for Mercyhurst, an NCAA Division II final four participant in 2003. Wingate is 1-2 overall. The Lakers visit another Deep South Conference member in Mars Hill College Friday at 4 p.m. The Bulldogs open DSC play Wednesday, March 10 with a 4 p.m. home game against St. Andrews Presbyterian College.

Mercyhurst scored seven times in the first quarter and added five more in the second to take a 12-2 lead at intermission. Laker junior attack Jerod Felice topped the point parade with a goal and nine assists. Felice scored the first goal of the game three minutes into the first quarter.

The Lakers outshot the Bulldogs 54-21. MC senior goalkeeper Mike Rispoli played the first three periods in goal, recording seven saves. Wingate senior netminder Jonathan Cofer (Kingwood, Texas) played almost 50 minutes, notching 15 saves.

The Lakers scored five goals in ten extra-man opportunities while Wingate finished two of seven. Four Bulldogs scored one goal each. Junior attack Travis Rimert (Berwyn, Pa.) scored his first career goal for the Bulldogs. Senior midfielder Blake Taylor (Williamstown, Victoria, Australia) also recorded a goal for the hosts.


Notre Dame de Namur (Cal.) 16, Queens University 5

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (March 3, 2004) - Notre Dame de Namur (Cal.) scored the first three gals of the game and never looked back as the Argos defeated Queens University of Charlotte 16-5 at Memorial Stadium in Charlotte, N.C. NDNU improves to 3-2 on the year while Queens evens its mark at 2-2.

Neil Butterfield and Nick Huetteman had three goals for NDNU. Mark Scherman contributed two goals and three assists while James Mutscheller added two goals and two assists for the visiting Argos.

Josh Bryce got the Royals on the board late in the first quarter. But the Argos were quick to answer scoring three more of their own, closing out the first quarter with a decisive 6-1 lead.

The second quarter continued in much the same fashion. NDNU dominated the ground balls and face-off play and were able to continue to build the lead. NDNU reeled off five more for an 11-1 margin before Queens' David Overberg was able to halt the onslaught. NDNU took an 11-2 lead into the break.

The third quarter saw little scoring as the Argos held Queens scoreless. NDNU managed just a goal in the quarter for a ten-goal lead at 12-2.

Ben Clausen, Andy Delamielleure and Bens Storms added goals in the final quarter for Queens. NDMU closed the door with four of their own to take the 16-5 victory.

Joel Heimbigner started the second half in goal for the Royals registering seven saves. Alex Tack led Queens with three assists. NDNU won 18-of-22 face-offs and picked up 45 groundballs to Queens' 18. NDNU fired 41 shots to the Royals' 22.

NDNU, who has also played Wingate and St. Andrews on its trip, will face Lees-McRae College Thursday at 3:00p.m. in Banner Elk, N.C. Queens visits Mercyhurst College (Pa.) next Thursday at 3:00p.m.


Greensboro 7, Catawba 6

SALISBURY, NC -- Greensboro College’s Nick Harness snapped a 6-6 tie , scoring with 3:28 remaining to lift the Pride to a 7-6 win over visiting Catawba in men’s lacrosse action on Wednesday afternoon. Greensboro improves to 1-2, while the Indians fall to 2-1.

Greensboro grabbed a 3-2 lead after a quarter and was on top 5-3 at the break. Catawba would scored twice in the third to tie the game before Matt Perry put the Pride on top with 1:28 left in the period. The Indians evened the game on a goal by Kurt Green with 9:33 remaining.

Jason Windett had a goal and two assists for Catawba. Frank Fish made 17 saves in goal for the Tribe. Harness had three goals for Greensboro and added an assist. Ronnie Chase had two helpers.
