Queens Closes Men's Lacrosse Scrimmage Season,

LEXINGTON, Va. (February 16, 2004) -- The Queens University of Charlotte men's lacrosse team traveled to Lexington, Va. last weekend and concluded their scrimmage season on a strong note as the Royals tied Division I Virginia Military Institute 6-6 and lost to Division III and nationally ranked Roanoke College 7-5. The Royals jumped out to an early 2-0 lead on VMI with goals from Ben Clausen and Andy Delamielleure. Queens continued to apply pressure as David Overberg, Delamielleure, Clausen and Ben Storms contributed goals. Owen Ham added two assists. The Keydets battled back and tied the game at 6-6 with 30 seconds left. Queens won the ensuing face-off and had a shot to win the game, but the Keydet goalie made the save. Joel Heimbigner was strong in goal for Queens with 19 saves. The Roanoke scrimmage was a different story as the Maroons jumped on the Royals early. Queens battled back led by goals from DJ Crump, Overberg, Delamielleure and Clausen to tie the game at 4-4. Roanoke used two goals to take a 6-4 lead. Overberg's second goal of the scrimmage helped pull the Royals to within one at 6-5. Roanoke sealed the win with a goal moments later for the 7-5 win. Drew Morgan had a strong effort in goal for Queens with 17 saves. "I was real happy with our play throughout the day," said Queens head coach James Fritz. "We have made great progress over the last two weeks and I think the team is really starting to come together for our first game this week. The guys really come to play and that is key." Queens prepares for the program's first official game as the Royals host Manhattanville College (N.Y.) Saturday at 2:00 p.m. Queens University of Charlotte is a private, coed, Presbyterian-affiliated liberal arts university in the heart of historic Charlotte serving approximately 1,700 undergraduate and graduate students through its College of Arts and Sciences, The Pauline Lewis Hayworth College and the McColl Graduate School of Business. |
